REI HAYAKAWA|Filmmaker
Rei Hayakawa is a Japanese film director with a background in sociology. In university, Hayakawa focused on the contemporary interpretations of Zen—such as minimalism and mindfulness—as a lens to examine the fusion of religious practice and capitalism in today’s society.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 era, Hayakawa has shifted his focus to the non-linguistic domain, producing short films including On the Eve of Revolution and Tetrapod at the film school of Tokyo. In 2024, he made his theatrical debut as the director of his first feature film, Four Equilateral Triangle (130 min) , produced with the support of Gosen City, Niigata. Portraying the dark side of modern society through the eyes of middle schoolers, the film became a long-running success, with its initial one-week screening extended to a full month.
Currently, Hayakawa engages in interdisciplinary research and artistic practice centered on the theme of the "Infinity," bridging Indian philosophy, Buddhist thought, philosophy of consciousness, and post-phenomenology, while resonating with the tectonic shifts brought about by the exponential development of AI.
